The 2021 Mazda3 is awarded the title of “Canadian car of the year”
What is the Canadian Car of the year? It is the Mazda3, designated Canadian car of the year by AJAC!

A title coveted by the entire automobile industry

The Mazda3 is the only compact car which has merited the prestigious title of Car of the year for two years in a row (2020-2021); title awarded by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

The 2021 Mazda3: three-time Canadian champion

Not only did the AJAC name the Mazda3 Canadian car of the year for 2020 and 2021, the AJAC also awarded the title Canadian car of the year to the 2004 edition of the Mazda3.  The Mazda3 compact sedan, three-time Canadian champion!  A record in the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada archives.

The 2021 Mazda3 characteristics most valued by the AJAC

In its evaluation of the 2021 Mazda3, the AJAC jury awarded its highest notes to the Mazda3 style, quality of construction, interior ergonomics (especially the driver position), safety systems and performance. All of the AJAC experts also noted the exceptional comfort of the 2021 Mazda3, to which the human-centric design of its interior and the low vibration and noise levels certainly contribute.

2021 Mazda3 sedan engines

The GX and GS versions of the 2021 car of the year are equipped with the 2.0 L Skyactiv-G engine which can be coupled with a 6 speed Skyactiv MT standard transmission or 6 speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission with manual-shift mode and drive-mode selection.  The 2021 Mazda3 GS also offers the choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

The 2021 Mazda3 GT can have either a standard 2.5 L Skyactiv-G engine or an optional 2.5 L turbo Skyactiv-G engine.  The 6 speed automatic transmission has been upgraded from the GS version with added speed control, accessible from the steering wheel.

The first engine has 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft engine torque and the turbo engine has 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft engine torque starting at 4 000 tr/min.

The 2021 Mazda3 Sport

The 100th anniversary GT version of the 2021 Mazda3 Sport has a 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine with a dynamic pressure turbo-compressor, coupled with a 6 speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission. This Mazda3 Sport has 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft engine torque.

The 2021 Mazda3 Sport also offers an optional predictive i-Activ all-wheel drive.  This ultra-performant all-wheel drive system has 27 sensors that monitor driving parameters no less than 200 times per second, for maximum road adaptability.   Moreover, the G-Plus Vectoring Control improves traction and road handling for the Mazda3 Sport hatchback, by subtly shifting the weight during turns.

I-Activsense advanced safety technologies

The new generation i-Activsense driver assist systems integrate the most recent active safety technologies.  Depending on the 2021 Mazda3 sedan models or the 2021 Mazda3 Sport models, drivers and passengers will be protected by the following safety features:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Adaptive headlights, which points low-beam headlights in the direction you steer
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure warning with Lane-Keep Assist
  • High Beam Control which switches automatically from high beam to low beam
  • Smart City Brake Support which detects obstacles and vehicles more than 200 meters ahead. When it detects a risk of a potential collision, it helps insure proper braking by slowing down the Mazda3 and eventually automatically braking for you if you fail to react in time.

A highly professional association

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) is an association of specialized professional journalists, editors and photographers who cover the automobile industry.  AJAC’s purpose, amongst other things, is “to promote, encourage, support and facilitate professionalism in Canadian automotive journalism and to ensure factual and ethical reporting about the automobile and automotive issues”.
